Australia Awards (Nauru) scholarship outcomes for 2018
Media release
3 October 2017
The Australia High Commission (DFAT) is pleased to announce the Australia Award Scholarship (AAS) and Australia Award Pacific Scholarship (AAPS) outcomes for the 2018 intake.
“This year we are pleased to offer eight AAS awards for university study in Australia and ten AAPS awards to study at universities and technical training institutes in the Pacific region to Nauruan citizens,” said High Commissioner John Donnelly.
“The selection committees for both the AAS and AAPS were spoiled for choice with good candidates this year. With 154 applications this year the Committees had more than three times as many applicants as were received in 2016!”
The Selection Committees for the AAS and AAPS are chaired by an Australian High Commission officer and include the DFAT Scholarships Manager, a representative from the Government of Nauru, and an AAS or AAPS Alumni (former scholarship recipient).
Each year, DFAT provides over $800,000 for scholarships from the $21.2 million per annum Australia-Nauru development cooperation program. The scholarships aim to build skills and develop knowledge that contributes to economic and human development in Nauru. Students gain qualifications in priority fields identified by the Government of Nauru, such as accounting, engineering, education, health, environment, law and public sector management.
The award recipients will undertake studies at their chosen Australian tertiary institutions through the AAS, and at tertiary and vocational institutions in Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu or Papua New Guinea through AAPS.
“I would like to thank the 154 applicants that submitted their applications in April,” High Commissioner Donnelly said. “While we are very pleased with the high number of quality applications it does mean that a lot of deserving applicants have missed out this year. However I would urge those that weren’t successful this time to keep striving towards their academic goals.”
“We would also like to re-introduce in the 50th anniversary year a small number of ‘Hammer DeRoburt’ scholarships for Government of Nauru staff that are focused on areas of public administration, public policy and good governance. This idea was raised during Minister Fierravanti-Wells’ visit to Nauru in April 2017.”
The Australian High Commission would like to congratulate the successful candidates and sincerely thank the Government of Nauru and Alumni selection committee members for participating in the selection process this year.
Congratulations again to the successful 18 Awardees of AAS & AAPS 2018 Intake.
